e-GEOS, a company formed by Telespazio (80%) and the Italian Space Agency (20%), strengthens its international presence with an important agreement signed in Australia for the supply of data generated by the Italian COSMO-SkyMed satellites.
e-GEOS was awarded an international tender for the supply of geoinformation services to the AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority), the governmental authority responsible for ensuring the safety of navigation and the protection of the marine environment in the country, as well as coordinate emergency operations at sea. The services will be provided by e-GEOS with the local partner Geospatial Intelligence Pty Limited.
In particular, e-GEOS will support the monitoring of oil spills thanks to the use of the COSMO-SkyMed radar constellation, able to continuously monitor the areas of interest in all visibility conditions. The satellite data will allow more in detail to identify illicit spills at sea and ships sources of pollution, allowing to address methods and timing of intervention.
The agreement also provides for the assessment of future forms of collaboration between e-GEOS and AMSA, which see the use of satellite data for further applications, such as search and rescue activities.
"The contract acquired by AMSA and the partnership signed with Geospatial Intelligence Pty Limited constitute a milestone in the activities of our group in the Australian space market - said Massimo Claudio Comparini, head of Telespazio's Geoinformation business line and e-GEOS CEO - confirming once again the validity of the services offered by e-GEOS in the field of earth observation ".
COSMO-SkyMed is the only Earth observation radar constellation for dual use, civil and military, existing today in the world. 10 years after the launch of the first satellite, which took place in 2007, the system has captured over 1 million scenes around the world, monitoring the Earth 24 hours a day in all weather and visibility conditions and ensuring essential information for safety, the monitoring of the territory and the sustainable management of its resources, the management of natural events and emergencies, the fight against the effects of climate change.
Funded by ASI, the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Education, University and Research, COSMO-SkyMed was created by the Italian space industry, with Leonardo and its joint ventures Thales Alenia Space and Telespazio. The COSMO-SkyMed data are marketed worldwide by e-GEOS.
