Several newspapers have appeared since the first days after the incident, news of ongoing investigations into the August 21 collision in Pacific waters, east of the Malacca Strait, between the USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) and a Liberian flag flying civilian ship (v.articolo). Special investigations conducted by the Navy cyber team, sent for the first time in the field to explore whether in this collision - the fourth involving military ships in the year - there is evidence of a cyber attack.
The task assigned to Navy cyber team, as well as collecting data and analyzing any evidence of cyber attack, includes the much more important thing to understand how to make cyber analytics in case of accidents of some relevance.
Surveys have been urged by the news of an inexplicable failure of the military ship's helm.
The vice adm. Jan Tighe (deputy chief of naval operations for Information Warfare and the 66th director of Naval Intelligence) said:We will try to clarify two aspects: find confirmation that the cyber has nothing to do with the collision and then make this part of the investigation become routine. It is a risk that we have in mind and both the top management and the men are ready to respond."
The operation, the first of its kind, was called "Operation Orion Hammer".
Until now, despite reports of a possible cyber attack, there seems to be no evidence of any kind that leads to confirmation of suspicions.
One thing is today safe: due to the accident, the fourth in the area, the deputy adm. Joseph P. Aucoin (photo), head of the Seventh Fleet, at the end of August was removed from office.
