After hours of work by the Italian Army bomb squad, the reclamation work of a bomb from the Second World War, of British origin and weighing 250 pounds, ended yesterday at the Military City "Cecchignola" , containing an explosive charge of approximately 35 kg of TNT.

The specialists of the 6th pioneer engineering regiment have operated, in coordination with the prefecture of Rome, and with the support of the Red Cross, adopting all the safety procedures, in full compliance with the current legislation on the prevention of contagion from Covid19.

By the territorial authorities, an evacuation area was created with a radius of 184 meters from the exact point of the discovery.

Furthermore, in order to limit the effects of a possible accidental explosion, the operators of the Army have carried out, in addition to the covering works with inert material, those of entrenchment, necessary to protect the underground structures insistent near the exposed site.

The projection of the elements of the envelope, in the event of an accidental explosion, was declared to be 1170m on the horizontal plane and 880m on the vertical plane.

In detail, the activities began at about 9.00 with the immobilization of the sensitive organ, placed in the front part of the device, which is devoid of safety devices but not armed. Subsequently, it was relocated inside the excavation previously carried out and an electro-detonating circuit was set up. Finally, after having reinterred the bomb, the blasting was carried out on site.

The reclamation work ended in the late morning, starting the resumption of normal activities and the circulation of local traffic.

The use of the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) operators of the Italian Army has therefore proved to be fundamental, who with their work, professionalism and competence, confirm the constant presence on the territory in favor of citizens and at the service of the country.
