At the logistical training base of the Tonale pass, "Tonolini" barracks, the exercise of a Special Operations Task Unit (SOTU) of the 185th "Folgore" objective acquisition reconnaissance regiment (RRAO) which had the aim of testing the SOTU's ability to plan and conduct typical special forces operations in a winter mountain environment.

The “FALENA I” takes place annually along the Alpine arc starting from the month of January. The exercise ends with an activity Special Reconnaissance (SR) and Direct Action (DA), via the indirect fire terminal guide (Terminal Operation Guidance – TGO). As a preface to the final phase, i Operational Detachments (DO) of the RRAO carried out preparatory training such as: stabilization and recovery of a wounded man in the mountains, shooting with portable weapons in the snow, parachute jump from an NH-90 helicopter of the 3rd Special Operations Helicopter Regiment (REOS) of the Army aviation and ski mobility.

During the conducted phase, the acquirers, after an infiltration movement on skis to reach the activation area, they set up an observation post to monitor the objective represented by a simulacrum of an artillery system, defended by a team of role-player opponent.

During the exercise, it was possible to test the sending of requests for fire support to the exercise direction in Livorno and the subsequent guidance of the simulated artillery fire on the objective using both national and NATO procedures.
