The bomb is an airplane bomb weighing 500 pounds of English manufacture, dating back to the Second World War, in poor condition and armed with two fuses (one at the head and the other at the tail).
The operations foresee three distinct and successive phases of intervention: the cleaning of the bomb at the site of the discovery (Saturday 15), disarming, transport safely to a suitable place for blasting and finally the blasting of the bomb (Sunday 16 March, beginning at 10 hours: 00 and end at 14 hours: approximately 00). To safeguard public safety, an area has been identified within the radius of 300 meters from the place of discovery, within which the evacuation of buildings and roads will be arranged for Sunday, with evacuation of the resident population .
The operations will be coordinated by the Pesaro / Urbino prefecture which held a coordination meeting with all the subjects involved in the intervention last January 20. The area will be adequately cordoned off and forbidden to vehicular and pedestrian traffic even if the interruption of any essential public service (electricity, gas, water or telephone lines) is not scheduled. The disarming and the blasting will be carried out by specialized personnel of the genius ferrovieri regiment, unit of the Army stationed in Castel Maggiore (BO).
The operations will be coordinated by Lieutenant Colonel Luigi Ferrieri, head of operations of the unit; the defusing and blasting works will see the use of a group of specialists led by the 1 Marshal Gianluca Rinaldi. Due to the technical skills of the personnel and the equipment provided, the Army provides its own contribution every day for interventions of public utility and for the protection of the environment.
In particular, the Genio departments, thanks to the experience gained in operational theaters and to the high “dual-use” connotation, operate in favor of the national community both in the case of public calamities, as recently happened on the occasion of the bad weather emergency in Lazio, Emilia, Veneto and Sardinia, both with the remediation of war residues still widely present on the national territory. In the 2013, the nuclei of specialists EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) of the genius departments of the Army have performed 2.141 specialized interventions for the remediation of 8.947 explosive devices. In the last 10 years the interventions have been over 30.000. The Army is the only Armed Forces responsible for the formation of the bomb disposal personnel of all the Police, Armed Forces and State Corps forces.
