This morning, the presentation of the “CalendEsarmy 2022”, with the theme “The Army's competences for the safety of the citizen”, took place in the Central Military Library of Palazzo Esercito. This year, in fact, it was decided to tell how the Armed Force is always ready to intervene in case of need in the service of the country, with the extraordinary skills developed during intense training activities and operational deployments in the international context.
The event, which was broadcast live streaming on the web channels of the Armed Force, it is once again open to the public, always in full compliance with the provisions issued by the Government regarding the containment of the diffusion of CoVid-19, and saw the presence of the Undersecretary of State for Defense, the Honorable Giorgio Mulé , of the presidents of the Senate and Chamber Defense committees, Senator Roberta Pinotti and the Honorable Gianluca Rizzo, of the Defense Chief of Staff, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone.
The editorial work was presented by the Army Chief of Staff, Corps General Pietro Serino, and by the director of ANSA, Dr. Luigi Contu, with the moderation of the journalist Manuela Moreno.
General Serino told how the choice of the theme is to be traced back to the images of the intervention of the Army in the first weeks of the pandemic emergency. Remembering the serene faces of the soldiers who intervened in the Lodi area in March 2020, "I felt that the reasons for their quiet awareness had to be explained to the Italians"he said.
“Hence the choice of a Calendar that tells why the Army is able to play a leading role in defending our fellow citizens whatever the nature of the threat. An all-round attitude and ability that lead us to affirm with equal serenity and awareness that the defense of the Italians is our mission ", continued the Army Chief of Staff.
Il CalendExercise 2022, therefore, the aim is to explain that the Army can be employed in the most disparate roles because it has three characteristics: operational combat capacity, logistical autonomy and the distribution of units throughout the national territory.
The first characteristic guarantees a mental, organizational and procedural attitude, to operate in degraded and risky contexts, an attitude of the unexpected that allows the Armed Force to face even the most unexpected threats, such as the case of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Logistic autonomy allows you to operate without having to rely on the country's infrastructure. Logistic capacity is the basis for conducting any operation and it is no coincidence that the Army logistic commander was chosen to be the extraordinary commissioner for the COVID-19 emergency.
The third, the distributed presence on the territory, is the reason for the timeliness of interventions, which allows the Army to be close to the Italians in every situation.
The future will see an Armed Force capable of expressing its capacity also by making use of the potential offered by cybernetics and satellite systems in the fields of communications and surveillance, as well as Chemical, Bacteriological and Radiological defense capabilities, which obviously include Military Health.
“This is why the condition of closeness with our fellow citizens that we live today must be maintained, promoting knowledge of the military world. The Calendar that we presented today also has this illustrative and informative function and we hope that Italians will browse and appreciate it ", concluded the gen. Serino.

Also for 2022, the calendar, created thanks to the collaboration with Leonardo SpA, sole sponsor and institutional partner, will contribute to supporting the National Work of Assistance for Orphans and Career Soldiers of the Army (ONAOMCE) to which a share of the sales proceeds. The National Opera currently assists about 500 orphans of officers, non-commissioned officers, graduates as well as enlisted men, to each of whom it provides annual subsidies for school training and for particular family-economic needs.
