The event was attended by the highest local religious, civil and military authorities.
General Castellano, before his speech, in order to express, all together, the feeling of condolence and closeness to the families of the victims of the tragic accident that occurred last June 15, asked to observe a minute of silence. Then he pointed out: “Today we salute General Pietro Tornabene, an officer with a very high cultural profile who brilliantly strengthened the bond with the city of Florence and the Tuscany Region during his mandate. Clear evidence of this is the recognition of the 'Fiorino d'Oro' and 'Pegaso d'Oro'. I am sure that the new commander, general of division Roberto Vannacci, with whom we share a common and vast operational experience, will also be able to keep the name of the IGM high and with the now consolidated team continue to give prestige to this Institute".
Lieutenant General Tornabene, who had assumed command about six years ago, wished to greet his Institute and the city of Florence as follows: “Today I end my professional experience with the pride of having commanded a unique entity which represents an excellence of the Armed Forces and of the whole country. To the men and women, civil and military, who are the soul of the Institute, goes my applause and my heartfelt thanks. I will never forget the faces of all of you and especially those of those we tragically lost last week: Leonardo Sensitivi and Tiberio Ghelardini. The IGM family will always be an open house for their families”.
