Army bomb squad neutralize a 500 lb bomb

After the work of the Italian Army bomb squad, the complex clearance of a 500-pound World War II aircraft bomb of US origin, containing an explosive charge of approximately 267 pounds ( 121 kilograms).

The specialists of the 21st engineer sappers regiment, units of the "Garibaldi" Bersaglieri brigade, worked in coordination with the prefecture of Salerno and the local authorities, adopting all the safety procedures, aimed at removing the two fuzes, nose and tail , and the subsequent transport and blasting in the quarry.

To increase the safety measures during the final phase of the reclamation, preliminary earthmoving works were carried out by special engineering vehicles. Subsequently, the Army bomb squad carried out the on-site reclamation on the bed of the Sciarapotamo stream, in compliance with the evacuation plan defined by the local authorities. Finally, once the fuzes were neutralized, the body of the bomb, deprived of sensitive organs, was safely transported and destroyed at the "Perruolo" quarry in the Municipality of Casalbuono (SA).
