US Navy-Naples: "The vademecum for the military on social media"

28/03/15

There are no imminent threats to Navy personnel and their families, after the publication of the names of 36 sailors on a list signed by the IT division of the Islamic State. The list was published last Thursday.

The soldiers are reassured in a message published on the homepage of the Navy signed by the United States European Naval Command based in Naples.

"If the situation changes, we will notify you immediately, the rules in force remain in force. Investigations are underway, although the best defense is caution and compliance with the procedures for sharing information on social media ”.

The Cyber Caliphate has published the names of a hundred Americans (including soldiers and relatives of the latter), engaged in Iraq and Syria. The terrorists 'IT branch claims to have violated the US defense network to retrieve information, but according to the Pentagon the news is collected directly from soldiers' social profiles.

Secret Service and FBI, meanwhile, are considering what to do. "There would be no particular threats to consider or signs of operational planning."

In reality, the military's reactions have been different. There are those who, having seen their name on the ISIS list, responded by sharing the news and inviting terrorists to face to face and who preferred to remove their account on facebook.

However, the Navy has again issued a vademecum for all the soldiers to whom it has been reiterated not to share too much information on social media and to control the settings referring exclusively to the user's friends.
