US Army: New Night / Thermal Viewers from 2017

10/05/15

BAE Systems is developing "glasses" for the US military that combine "night vision" with "thermal imaging technology". The system, worth 434 million dollars, will give the soldiers greater precision in target acquisition, regardless of the weather conditions on the operating theater.

The new glasses should be delivered between the end of next year and the beginning of the 2017. American soldiers currently use two different devices: one for night vision and one for thermal images, usually mounted on the weapon. This means that soldiers must acquire targets through their night vision goggles and then refer to the thermal image of the weapon.

The BAE glasses will integrate night vision with thermal imaging technology thanks to a wireless interface. In this way, the soldiers will remain hidden longer, reducing the time of laser aiming at the target.

BAE Systems is developing systems within the Army Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate as part of the Night Vision Goggle III and Family of Weapon Sight-Individual technology.
