Farewell to the USS Dallas, the class attack submarine Los Angeles which we all learned to worship in the Hollywood masterpiece 'Hunt for Red October'.

The 'class 688' submarine from where the famous Jack Ryan, character of Tom Clancy played by Alec Baldwin, communicates through 'single sonar pulses' with the deserter commander Marko Ramius (Sean Connery), goes retirement after 35 years of active service in the 'US Navy.

Commissioned in the 1981, the USS Dallas he returned for the last time to the base of Groton, Connecticut, where he joined his family of nuclear attack submarines, the most widespread during the Cold War, purposely designed for the advanced launch through vertical pipes (Vertical Launch System, VLS) of cruise missiles Tomahawk.

During its last journey in service the USS Dallas has sailed 42.000 miles of sea, calling at the ports of Oman, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Scotland and France.

I don't know about you, but for me it will always remain an illustrious accomplice of my early passion for the Navy, as well as an important piece of evidence to try to understand as a child what Cold War meant.
