Russian press, migrant tragedy: "The fault is yours alone"

23/04/15

"The fault is Europe. The tragedies of migrants were caused by the lack of far-sightedness of the West, which thought only to depose the former Rais Gaddafi and not to fill the power vacuum created ”.

The Russian press has issued its verdict in the last tragedy that occurred last Sunday off the coast of Tripoli, with the shipwreck of 900 people. According to the Russians, those responsible for what is happening are the United States and Europe. In the same period last year, ninety were lost in the Mediterranean. A year later, the number increased exponentially considering also another incident that occurred at the beginning of the 2015. In four months, the migrants who died hoping to reach the Italian coasts and, therefore, Europe, are over two thousand.

The major Russian newspapers, in analyzing the current situation, have no doubts: the problems arose with the power vacuum that occurred with the fall of the former Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

The Russians write. "Gaddafi was an eccentric, in the best definition that can be associated with the former rais. He traveled with a squadron of Amazons, The Revolutionary Nuns and slept in a bulletproof tent. His utterances were in some ways absurd, as when he claimed that the Mosquitos would defend them from the colonialists ".

For the Russians, making a basketry reference, "Gaddafi had become the Dennis Rodman of world leaders".

The Russians continue. "He had, however, established a relationship with European countries. In the 2004, Gaddafi offered to control the flow of migrants to Europe ".

The Russian press remembers the meeting with former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and Gaddafi's warning: "Europe could become black, considering that there are millions of people who want to enter. I wonder if your continent will continue to be advanced and supportive or if it will be subjugated by the invasion ”.

That proposal for help had a cost. Of the five billion euros the year initially requested, it fell to 50 million. In exchange for that money, Gaddafi essentially closed the Libyan coast. Guard towers and internment camps were built along the beach to capture migrants in transit to the Italian coast.

“It wasn't pleasant, but illegal immigration through Libya dropped 75% in 2010. A year later, Gaddafi was dead, dragged through the streets by 'rebels', after being defeated with NATO help. In the following years, the situation in Libya worsened. In the absence of a centralized government, the country has split between rival militias. Traveling is now more dangerous than it has ever been ”.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the ship that left Tripoli Saturday morning housed individuals from Eritrea, Syria, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Ivory Coast and Ethiopia.

The Russians conclude. "Europeans may also have hated Gaddafi, but that man has maintained a certain sense of stability. After being overthrown with NATO assistance, alliance members no longer have anyone to counter the wave of immigrants headed for their coasts. "
