Russia has also deployed the infamous Mi-24 helicopters in Syria at the Hmeymim base, which has now become the main outpost for raids against the Islamic State.
Each Mi-24 - add from the Russian Defense Ministry - it is armed with four rocket launchers and a 30mm cannon.
Their task is currently relegated to protecting the Hmeymim base, although their use could be extended to search and rescue.
In addition to the Hinds, the Russians have deployed Mi-8AMTSh transport helicopters, codenamed Terminator.
Finally, the Kamov Ka-52 'Alligator' also take off from the al-Hmeimim base.
