Peru and Chile at the "Gamma Daimiel 2015" exercise in Spain

From 9 to 13 March, an important simulation activity called Gamma Daimiel 2015, of the Spanish Military Emergency Unit (EMU) took place in Daimiel, in the Autonomous Community of Castilla La Mancha, Spain.

The unit specifically deals with the joint response of the Spanish armed forces in emergency and security situations, either following a natural event or as a result of an accident caused by human intervention in industrial activities, as happened with Gamma. Daimiel 2015.

As for the simulation carried out, the activity focused on the alleged explosion of a petrochemical plant that generates numerous victims, extensive damage to public and private infrastructures, as well as interruption of basic services in the affected area.

The purpose of the simulation was to train the participants "in the resolution of a major catastrophe, associated with a chemical risk that involves serious damage to people, treatment of trauma, transport needs, homelessness in shelters and pollution of the environment."

It is interesting to note the presence of observer countries such as the United States, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru and Chile, France, Portugal and Morocco that sent their military.

Species, the particular interest shown by Chile and Peru. The government of this last Latin American country has authorized the transfer of Colonel Victor Hugo Hernandez, of the Air Force of Peru, to Spain, in order to evaluate the procedures developed by the EMU. In the specific case, to control environmental pollution, toxic waste management, air transport of wounded, operational health emergency, search and rescue, receiving international aid, restoring essential services and infrastructure.

The Spanish Red Cross also participated in the exercise, taking charge of the Military Emergency Department (UME), given the expected participation of more than 3.000 soldiers. Specifically, she took care of all her psycho-social assistance, temporary housing, emergency health care and pre-hospital logistics.
