The US Department of Defense yesterday announced awards for 160 university researchers from 84 institutes for a total of $ 47 million, thanks to the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP).

The program incentivizes the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment and military research as well as training researchers.

In a statement Dale Ormond, the head of research, stated that "the program provides universities with the opportunity to acquire fundamental laboratory tools, usually out of reach for most research grants".

According to the Department of Defense, the awards are managed through a merit competition held jointly by theArmy Research Office, L 'Office of Naval Research, and fromAir Force Office of Scientific Research.

The incentivized proposals concern university researchers who carry out scientific and engineering research of interest for national defense.

The fields cover: materials, structures, processing techniques, quantum and nanoscience, computer science and networks, electronics, electromagnetism, optics and acoustics, neuroscience, fluid dynamics, robotics and artificial intelligence, environmental sciences, and life support sciences and engineering.

According to the Department, the annual selection process would be highly competitive.

Last year, 685 proposals were received, for 283 million dollars.

The prizes awarded range from $ 53.000 to $ 1,4 million, with an average of around $ 300.000 in recognition.
