The Pentagon is worried by the attacks of small portable drones and acquires the 'DroneDefender': a shoulder weapon designed to cut the contact between a UAV and its controller through radio waves.

The Drone Defender developed by Battelle, a non-profit research and development organization based in Columbus, Ohio, consists of an assault rifle equipped with a jammer (frequency jammer) that points towards a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) or UAS (unmanned aircraft system) threat 'cuts' the contact between the drone and its remote pilot, therefore it makes it fall or land according to its settings. It has a useful range of 400 meters, its weight is 15 lbs (almost 7 kg) and is powered by a 10 lbs (4,5 kg) battery placed in a backpack.

To address the growing threat of drones that can undermine troops in the field, military bases, the US Department of Defense and the US National Security Department have purchased 100 DroneDefender which will be shared between the various bodies and the various government agencies.

The sale of anti-drone technology is prohibited by the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Aviation Administration, but the Battelle he elaborated the project at the request of several film studios looking for effective methods to neutralize the drones recently used by the paparazzi to spy on the sets or homes of the actors.
