The hacking of Army.mil on Twitter would have led to the publication of a message accusing the US military of training terrorists in Syria.
In a statement, the Pentagon admitted that a violation had occurred, but had not confirmed the authors.
No data would have been stolen.
It has also been pointed out that the American defense servers are constantly under attack.
Five months ago, US Central Command's social media would have been violated by Islamic State hackers, while last week - in one of the biggest attacks in American history - Chinese hackers would steal information from federal personnel databases.
