Crisis in Ukraine: A-10 returns to Europe

12/02/15

The Air Force will field twelve A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and around 300 aviators for six months at the German base in Spangdahlem. A move destined to strengthen security in the Region where the fighting continues to increase. This is what was confirmed by the US Air Force command in Europe.

The Warthogs will arrive in Spangdahlem by the end of the week. The European shift for A-10 is part of the security package supporting the "Operation Atlantic Resolve", the military response to the crisis in Ukraine.

A-10 will carry out joint training missions with Eastern European air forces.

The new deployment marks the first piece of the security package planned for Europe.

The Air Force is not new to these shifts. In the Pacific region take place from the 2004.

The strange case is that of the A-10. Repeatedly considered finished, always put back on the front line.

The twelve A-10 that will arrive in Germany, will find the same base that, until May of the 2013, hosted the 81 ° Fighter Squadron previously assigned to Spangdahlem, department then suppressed for lack of funds. Spangdahlem, after twenty years, lost his 21 A-10 then redeployed to serve in the Pacific region.

Less than a year after their departure, the Ukrainian crisis began.
