The Undersecretary of State for Defense Angelo Tofalo visited today the C4 Defense Command, established on May 20, 2004 and which, for 1 year, has also hosted the new Joint Command for Cyber Operations (CIOC).
"It is the youngest operational reality that the Defense has put in place, less than a year ago, to protect networks and information", Said Undersecretary of State for Defense Angelo Tofalo referring to the Interforces Command for Cybernetic Operations (CIOC),"We must invest in this military force that is added to those already operating on land, sea and in the sky, so that it reaches full operational capacity and can thus begin conducting cyber operations of great strategic value.".
Organization, information, infrastructure, personnel and technologies are some of the main topics, among those that can be made public, discussed during the briefing. Particular attention was given above all to the selection, training and employment of personnel who must necessarily have certain cyber skills and in this framework Undersecretary Tofalo called for "a greater synergy between the military and the technological civil world that can lead to a high level of professionalism in the near future, thanks to the exchange of know-how and technical skills".
"The cyber theme filled a significant space at the NATO summit that was held recently in Brussels", Said Undersecretary Tofalo,"Thanks to the sensitivity of Minister Trenta on the issues of security that in that important venue has stressed the importance of allocating part of the expenditure devoted to the defense to the cyber sector".
Undersecretary Tofalo has always shown particular attention to the security and intelligence sector that he had already known in the previous legislature, when he was a member of Copasir and the Defense Commission.
"I have had the opportunity to appreciate the delicate work you are called to perform, in an environment, which is the cybernetic, vast, complex and dynamic", Undersecretary Tofalo told the operators,"A visit that allowed me to see you at work and to deepen my knowledge of the various operational centers responsible for monitoring the Defense Network, in its various levels and protocols".
While waiting for the delegations to be officially announced to the two Undersecretaries of State for Defense, it seems that the one concerning the cyber security will be assigned to the undersecretary Tofalo.
The main institutional duties of C4 Difesa are to guarantee the correct functioning of the systems and services of the Information and Communication Technology area of the Inter-agency Summit Area, guaranteeing maximum efficiency and interoperability with other Public Administrations. The SICRAL Satellite Management and Control Center also depends on the C4 Defense Command.
The Defense is the owner and operator of a network infrastructure that is comparable, with about 12.000 km of optical fiber and 10.000 Km of radio links, to a real service provider, rank that will be fully achieved with the completion of the Autonomous System project .
