19/01/15

The 16 January ended, at the NBC Interforce Technical Logistics Center (CETLI NBC) in Civitavecchia, the 11 ° training course for inspectors of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPAC), organization awarded in the 2013 of the Nobel Prize for peace, which has the task of verifying the implementation of the 1993 Paris Convention by the 190 signatory countries.

The activity, started on 13 last January, consisted in the complete simulation of an inspection carried out at a site of storage and destruction of chemical weapons which is precisely the CETLI NBC. During the course, civilian personnel working under the OPAC, 6 units of various nationalities (United States of America, England, Australia, Serbia and Jordan) had the opportunity to carry out investigations and checks on materials and means in use, practicing in this way to operate in safety using appropriate work procedures and wearing the foreseen personal protective equipment.

During the activities the inspectors were also able to use the documentation made available by the CETLI NBC regarding the recovery, storage and demilitarization of chemical material; this allowed them to draw up an inspection report very similar to the one produced at the end of the actual inspections carried out at the destruction sites of the signatory countries of the Paris Convention.

During the course closing ceremony, with which the total number of inspectors trained at CETLI NBC starting from 1997 exceeded the 200 units, the OPAC Team Leader, Jonathan Mills, underlined the flattering outcome of the activities, highlighting moreover, the importance of the existing collaboration relationship between Italy and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
