As part of the Delegation Law 244 of 2012 for the reorganization of the Military Instrument, the Army has started a process of revision and rationalization of the entire Armed Force. In this context, COMFODIS will be multifunctional, continuing to guarantee the training of personnel (about 30.000 soldiers), so as to make it fully operational (competence already ensured by the old 2nd FOD), and also assuming responsibility for the infrastructural and territorial aspects, taking care specifically, promotional and presence activities in the area.
Geographically it will have competence over 10 administrative regions of central and southern Italy (including the two major islands), it will interact with 48 prefectures on a territory of approximately 150.000 km², which has more than 27.000.000 inhabitants.
