Army blasters defuse World War II air bomb from 500 pounds

Army bomb squads defused a 500-pound, about 230-kg British aircraft bomb, dating back to the Second World War, found near the Municipality of Aprilia. Specialists from the 21st Engineers Regiment of Caserta, the Army department responsible for the remediation of war remnants found in the province of Latina, intervened for the deactivation of the bomb.

The disengaging operations, coordinated by the Prefectures of Latina and Rome, began at 7:00 am with the evacuation of an area of ​​approximately 1.800 m radius, therefore for safety reasons, more than 3.000 residents were evacuated and the circulation was suspended rail and the total closure of vehicles in transit throughout the surrounding area. In order to reduce the eviction radius, the Genio's military set up temporary containment works, thus reducing the number of citizens to be evacuated and limiting the inconvenience to the population.

At 10: 50 about the army bombers began the removal of the quills, or the two mechanical devices to activate the device. The phase of despoleting the bomb ended at 12: 20, about an hour before the initial time schedule. Subsequently, after rendering it harmless, the bomb was transported to the Stradaioli quarry of Aprilia, where it was made to shine at 15: 10.

The teams of Army specialists, who have been working all over the country every day, have since neutralized more 1.700 bombs since the beginning of the year, for a total of over 35.000 remediation interventions carried out in the last ten years. The Army is the only Armed Force in charge of training and upgrading the bombers of the Armed Forces and Armed Corps of the State.
