Sinai, the General Manager of the MFO meets our sailors

The "desert sailors" of the Tenth Coastal Naval Group, under command of Frigate Captain Francesco Pepe, received a visit last week from HE David M. Satterfield, Director General of the MFO (Multinational Force and Observers).

In the delicate transition period of Egypt towards the presidential elections scheduled for next April, the Director General wanted to share some considerations on the present and the possible future of the country, as well as underline the role of the MFO as an element of stability in the Sinai peninsula.

After more than thirty years from its establishment, in fact, the peace mission is still firmly supported by the two signatory countries of the treaty stipulated after the "Yom Kippur War", Egypt and Israel. The multinational force, to which the Italian Navy supplies in full the naval component arises as a guarantee of the peaceful relations established between the two states and to protect the clauses established in the peace treaty.

During the visit on board of the naval units and the interview with the Coastal Patrol Unit with the Captain of Fregata Pepe, the General Manager showed great interest and underlined the importance of the patrolling activity near the Tiran Island carried out by the ships of the class "Explorer", Also in consideration of the advantage that the MFO derives from being able to have a viewing platform and mobile carryover with high flexibility of use.

David Satterfield has been appointed Director General of MFO in the 2009. He also temporarily held the position of Ambassador of the United States to the Arab Republic of Egypt from the 1 September 2013 to the 21 January 2014.
