The 285 bombs and 4 are altogether spherical hand grenades - all Austro-Hungarian and dating back to the First World War - found and removed in recent days by divers in the waters of Lake Varna (BZ), located at 750 meters above sea level .

The devices recovered from the divers of the Underwater Operating Groupi of Underwater command and incursors of the Military Navy seconded to the SDAI Nucleus of Ancona (Demining Defense Antimezzi Insidiosi), have been handed over to the bomb squads of the Army who will provide for their destruction.

The emergency remediation intervention was requested by the prefecture of Bolzano, following a report by a citizen, to the Diving Operations Group (GOS) of the Italian Navy together with that of the bomb squads of the 2nd Engineer Regiment of Trento of the Army.

The latter is one of the many activities that the marine divisions carry out to safeguard public safety even in inland waters, carrying out high-risk underwater operations aimed at restoring safety conditions for bathing and navigation.

Last year the divers of the Italian Navy recovered and destroyed a total of 12.400 explosive remnants of war, while from 1 in January 2017 they have already neutralized 16.318 from Italian seas, rivers and lakes, without counting the thousands of bullets of lesser caliber than the 12,7 mm also removed and destroyed.

With a history of 168 years, the Palombari represent national excellence in the field of underwater activities being able to conduct work dives up to 1.500 meters in depth and in any operating scenario.
