EUROMARFOR under the Portuguese operational command since last September, is a naval force - not permanent - formed the 15 May 1995 from France, Spain, Italy and Portugal able to fulfill the main missions defined in the Petersberg Declaration, such as maritime control, assistance humanitarian and population evacuation, maintenance and reacquisition of peace and crisis management conditions.
The activity of EUROMARFOR is also aimed at strengthening cooperation with the Mediterranean Dialogue nations (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia) and the 5 + 5 initiative (which involves ten Western Mediterranean nations: Algeria, France, Italy, Libya, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Portugal, Spain and Tunisia).
Italy contributes during this period with Nave Sirocco after having given up command of the device in September 2017. During the two years of Italian command, the Naval Force participated in training activities aimed at dialogue and cooperation with the Mediterranean countries, in particular with Tunisia and Morocco during the Multicooperative Exercise 16 and 17.
