Garibaldi leaves for Afghanistan

Yesterday, with the departure of the last elements of the command of the "Garibaldi" brigade and of Brigadier General Maurizio Angelo Scardino, the transfer of the 1300 bersaglieri that will constitute the last Italian contingent of the ISAF mission (International Security Assistance Force) to Afghanistan.

The military personnel will have tasks of training, consulting and support for Afghan security forces and, at the same time, logistical tasks.

The Bersaglieri will carry out the most complex logistical operation conducted by the Italian armed forces since the end of the Second World War; by 2014, with the end of the ISAF mission, approximately 5500 linear meters of material means will be transferred to Italy.

The ISAF mission began in the 2003, in these years over the military 60.000 have alternated which have allowed the region of Herat, the one under the Italian responsibility, to be the first region to start the process of transition of power to the local authorities.
