One year of Army: missions, emergencies and remediation of devices

More than 7000 were the men and women of the Army engaged during the 2014 in Italy and abroad. In the main international missions 2500 men and women with stars have operated in Afghanistan (830 unit), Lebanon (1000 unit), Kosovo (350 unit) and Central Africa (270 unit).

In the 2014 Italy has maintained the leadership of the two most important missions in progress, KFOR in Kosovo and UNIFIL in Lebanon. Furthermore, since February of this year, Italy has held the leadership of the EUTM Somalia mission, conducted under the aegis of the European Union.

In the same period, on the national territory, about 4600 soldiers guaranteed the security on the national territory in the main Italian cities, from Gorizia to Trapani, with the operation "safe roads" in competition with the police in the surveillance of sensitive targets, of the centers for immigrants and in patrolling metropolitan areas.

In the 2014 there was no lack of interventions by the Army units in cases of public calamity and public utility. Thanks to the training, the specific skills and the "dual use" capacity, the Army intervened with more than 1700 military and special vehicles, for the rescue of the populations.

Among the most recent and significant interventions, those of Genoa and Alexandria, where more than 500 military and 100 special vehicles, including lighting towers, earth-moving machines and wheeled backhoe loaders, have operated continuously for the duration of the emergency, helping the population, clearing the premises of debris and restoring the road network.

In Sardinia, due to the bad weather emergency last January, military 100 and 35 vehicles were used. In Emilia Romagna, following the flooding of the Secchia river that struck the province of Modena, military 200 intervened.

In Pisa, due to the storm that hit the city in February, military 200 intervened, in Belluno due to the exceptional snowfall, military 200 equipped with BV 206 tracked vehicles, the same ones used in Afghanistan, rescued the population and restored the viability.

In Lazio, in February 2014, due to the violent storm that hit the capital, were used 200 military and special equipment supplied, of which six motor pumps. In Treviso, military 350 intervened to monitor the Livenza and Monticano rivers and to drain water and remove debris.

In the field of public utility competitions, to guarantee the functioning of the services, 80 soldiers of the army genius worked for the installation of a Bailey bridge in the historic center of Palermo, delivered last 31 October to the province's Transport Company .

During the year, moreover, the Army continued its work of public utility and environmental protection by guaranteeing the remediation of war surpluses with well 2250 specialized remediation interventions.
