Reclamation operations in Molfetta

Monday morning in the port of Molfetta (BA) the operations for the remediation of war surpluses by the army bomb squads were resumed. The activity will continue until the 31 October, the safety of the port began in May 2009 and is part of the activities envisaged by the program agreement for the reclamation of port areas, signed by the Ministry of the Environment, Puglia region, ARPA Puglia and ICRAM (central institute for scientific and technological research applied to the sea).

The main objective of the program is the identification, recovery and deactivation of war remnants present on the seabed of the port and coastal areas of the Apulian Adriatic.

In recent weeks, 55 bombs from 30 pounds of English nationality have been identified.

The decommissioning and subsequent blasting will be carried out by the EOD team (English acronym for Explosive Ordnance Disposal, or reclamation of explosive devices) of the 11 ° army sappers regiment based in Foggia.

The bomb technicians will provide for the storage and securing of the residues in a special area to avoid any spontaneous combustion processes. The bombs will then be transported and made to shine in a quarry in Ruvo di Puglia.

The Italian army in recent years 10 has carried out over 30.000 interventions for the clearance of ordnance dating back to the world wars, from the 2009 in the Apulian port areas, have already been defused 320 ordnance, of which about over 294 aircraft bombs and 26 rockets.
