The Army intervenes on the Tagliamento

02/04/15

A war remnant dating back to the Second World War was made to shine this morning in the municipality of Codroipo (UD) on the bed of the Tagliamento river (in the Ponte della Delizia locality), by the army's bomb squad in force at the 3rd Genio Guastatori Regiment of Udine.

The remnant was a 1000 pound aircraft bomb model MK 1, type GP-HE, of English manufacture, most likely launched towards the railway bridge.

The bomb weighed 490 Kg for a length of 132 cm and a diameter of 41 cm.

The sappers of the 3rd Genic Regiment have created a containment structure in Hesco Bastion, in order to reduce and confine the space exposed to the effects of intentional detonation. These activities in support of the population are among the institutional competences of the Army which, also thanks to the dual capacity to cooperate with civil authorities in favor of citizenship and to act in operational theaters, is able to operate in favor of the national community in case of public calamities and for the reclamation of the territory from war surpluses

Already over a hundred operations have been carried out since the beginning of the 2015 by the EOD team (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), in charge of reclaiming the territory of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the provinces of Treviso and Venice from the war remnants of the two still existing world conflicts.
