Yesterday morning, the Italian Army made available to the University of Reggio Calabria and the Calabria Region the experience of the 11 ° Regiment Genio Guastatori Regiment of Foggia, of the "Pinerolo" Brigade, for a collaboration with a group of researchers seismic engineering in order to carry out experimental tests and allow the monitoring of the stresses of an earthquake on a vaulted ceiling, typical of buildings of historical and cultural interest.

The tests were conducted at the Convent of San Francesco di Paola in Roccabernarda (KR) and provided for the positioning of explosive micro-charges controlled underground, this to induce, in the walls of the ancient structure, very similar micro-forces, but not capable of causing any damage to those that are recorded in the presence of a seismic event.

The "Pinerolo" sappers, dosing the explosive charges, have operated with very high precision and professionalism to simultaneously satisfy the scientific needs of the researchers with those to contribute significantly to the measures that can be adopted for the conservation of the monument and its safety.

The 11 ° Regiment Genio Guastatori of the Mechanized Brigade "Pinerolo" of Bari, is the unit of the Weapon of Genius that the 2 ° Defense Forces Command also uses for the operations of reclamation unexploded ordnance in the extended area, on the Adriatic side , from the province of Chieti to Salento and on the Tyrrhenian side from the province of Potenza to Reggio Calabria.

In particular, the Genio departments, thanks to the experience gained in operational theaters and to the high “dual-use” connotation, operate in favor of the national community both with the remediation of war residues still widely present in the national territory, and in the case of public utilities at favor of the civilian population.
