Honorary degree to the Attorney General of Herat, Mareya Bashir

The University of Sassari has conferred an honorary degree in "Planning, Policies for the City, the Environment and the Landscape" to Mareya Bashir, Attorney General of the province of Herat, first and still the only woman to hold this assignment in Afghanistan, for years at the forefront in the fight against illegality and for the affirmation of women's rights.

After the greetings of the magnificent rector of the university the president of the specific degree course intervened which illustrated the proposal to confer an honorary degree for the actions undertaken by Mareya Bashir "in defense of local communities and for the tenacity in pursuing a city ​​and a territory of rights ".

This will be followed by Bashir's Lectio doctoralis entitled "Women voting for presidential elections; a new conquest of women in Afghanistan. Challenges and future prospects".

During the ceremony, Mareya Bashir thanked the "Sassari" brigade, for the training and training activities carried out in recent years by the "Dimonios" and the Italian army against the Afghan security forces, the support provided in the conduct of the operations, especially during the electoral phase, the important reconstruction and development work carried out in the province of Herat and the constant attention to gender policies implemented by Female Engagment Teams (FET), units of soldiers of the Italian army, thanks many steps forward have been taken by women in Afghan society in terms of economic independence, participation in decision-making processes, level of education and promotion of equal rights for men and women.
