24/09/14

A representative of the 5 ° regiment genius stationed in Macomer (Nuoro), employed by the "Sassari" brigade, attended this morning at the general hearing held by the Holy Father in St. Peter's Square.

The invitation, received directly from the Holy See, aims to testify to the pontiff's closeness and gratitude for the fruitful work carried out by the Sassari brigade in the "Safe Roads" operation on the Piazza di Roma.

In particular, the 5 ° engineers of Macomer work to ensure the safety of some particularly sensitive infrastructures connected with the Vatican, a context in which they have distinguished themselves for efficiency and impeccability in the service.

The genius unit is employed by the 2 tactical group "Sassari", under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Gianluigi Arca.

At the end of the hearing, Lieutenant Luigi D'Ambrosio, commander of the aforementioned 5 ° unit, presented a regimental scarf to the pontiff, whose white and red colors resume not only those of the spoiler units but also those of the glorious " Sassari ”and of the heroic deeds carried out by the“ intrepid Sardinians ”on the Karst highlands during the First World War, where they gained the epithet of“ red devils ”.

The 5 ° engineers, in addition to the recent use in Afghanistan as part of the ISAF mission, in support of the local security forces for the control of the territory of the province of Herat, intervened in support of the population of the city of Olbia, struck by the flood last November, thus receiving unanimous praise from the same population and local and national institutions.
