Princess Beatrice of the Netherlands at the Military Geographic Institute

31/07/15

Princess Beatrice of the Netherlands (Beatrix Wilhelmina Armgard van Oranje-Nassau), formerly queen from the 30 April 1980 to the 30 April 2013, visited the Military Geographic Institute. After the welcome speech by the commander, division general Gianfranco Rossi, the important guest was able to appreciate the historical-cultural relevance and technical excellence of the Florentine body.

During the visit, organized by Dr. Andrea Ghiottonelli - art historian, the princess became interested in the tasks of the Institute which, as is known, is the official state cartographic body, supports, at home and in operational theaters, the units of the Italian Army in the specific sector, operates in the maintenance of national borders and is responsible for the conservation of the cartography.

Precisely this "conservative" aspect of historical memory has particularly attracted the attention of the former Queen to whom photographic collections dating back to the 1865 as well as the collections of atlases from the 1570 to the present day have been shown. The exclusive moment of the morning revealed the access inside the corridor in which fragments of frescoes attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci are visible.

The visit in the Library and in the Museum of the Instruments have allowed an ideal journey in time along the progress that, over the centuries, geographical sciences and cartography have made in the history of humanity.
