03/10/14

Today, the 9th regiment has completed training activities in the Majella park. For many young Alpine troops, just enlisted, it was the first experience ever on the Apennine trails, with progressively difficult and regulated gears with weapon and bundled backpack.

The program of excursions - an essential formative moment for the alpine specialty units - 6 has well understood ascensions - has touched peaks around the 2800 meters - 4 climb over the hills, 4 night gears and 14 overnight stays at altitude, in addition to 2 routes on via ferratas .

The overall linear development of the mountain movement was of 160 km, with 12000 meters in altitude to be overcome.

For the 9 ° regiment, commanded by Colonel Massimo Iacobucci, it was a welcome return, after more than a decade, on the peaks of the Majella, an Apennine area of formidable beauty and absolute mountaineering difficulty, a place where alpine tradition and military history crossed several times during the last century.

There are numerous places where the men and women of the 9th established their bases from which to set off: the camps of the 93rd company "fai strada" and the 108th company "a zump de camosce" were set up in succession in the territories of Campo di Giove, Passo San Leonardo and Pacentro while the regimental command has established its decision-making center in the evocative areas of the Majella park.

Among the most important ascents are Mount Mileto (altitude 2793), Mount Tavola Rotonda (q. 2403), Mount Amaro (q. 2796) and Mount Morrone (q. 2061) the latter altitude gained after a suggestive passage on the slope dominated by the hermitage of Celestino V.

Security was provided by 2 rescue teams made up of military mountaineering instructors, the bases' operating rooms were able to track the positions of the companies on the move in real time via GPS-radio integration, guaranteeing the regiment's command instant control of training and logistics activities.

For the Alpine 9 °, the recently completed marching field represented not only a peculiar and very important training moment, but also an opportunity to relive the traditions of the Abruzzo alpine history with the numerous ANA groups in the area and to honor the many fallen with the stars that on the Majella slopes participated in the liberation of Italy at the end of the Second World War.
