On the spot a specialized team of the 4 ° Palermo sappers regiment intervened under the command of the Aosta brigade; these teams are called EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) nuclei most commonly referred to as bomb squads.
The disconnection activity was carried out with a spool extractor key operated remotely by means of a linkage system.
The activity was preceded by some protection works as near the area where the bomb was found there is a pipeline for the supply of methane gas which supplies the municipalities of Gioiosa Marea and Brolo.
The specialists of the 4 ° regimental engineering regiment of Palermo, proceeded to disarm by removing the spool and, subsequently, transported safely to a quarry in the Cavaretta district in order to carry out the blasting operation without endangering the population.
