(To Army Majority State)
23/08/15

At the request of the prefecture of Bologna, the bomb squad of the Army of the Railway Engineer Regiment of Castel Maggiore, at the request of the prefecture of Bologna, today shone the war device of the second world war found on the bed of the river Reno, near the "Pontelungo" along the via Emilia Ponente, between the districts of Borgo Panigale and Reno. At the end of the operation, around 14: 30, the over 4.700 people evacuated from the so-called "danger zone" were able to return to their homes.

The bomb, an American-made second world war bomb, in a poor state of repair but still active and loaded with about 30 kg. of TNT, at the beginning of the week, had been immediately placed in safety thanks to the barricading work carried out by the army bomb squads.

The day's operations, conducted at the site of the discovery as agreed with the prefecture and municipality of Bologna, began at 09: 00 when Army specialists discovered the bomb covered by the mound of soil; they then proceeded with the delicate operations of triggering the TNT charges placed around the bomb to allow their definitive destruction. In the last phase of reclamation, which lasted until 14: 15, the bomb technicians closed the special 6 mt containment structure built in the previous days to reduce the chipping effects resulting from the explosion and then moved away to proceed with blasting at a distance.

The particular security measures adopted for the intervention have made it possible to considerably limit the inconveniences by reducing both the danger zone, from 1.500 mt to 500 mt of radius from the place of discovery and the population to be evacuated, passing from around 38.000 inhabitants to around 4700 .
