Memorial Day

27/01/15

- This morning the commander of the Terrestrial Operative Forces, general of the corps of the army Alberto Primicerj, participated in the "Day of the memory", a recurrence wanted by the Italian Parliament to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust.

The commemoration began in Piazza Bra with the deposition of a laurel wreath at the monument to the deportees and then, in the Great Guard Hall, the highest city authorities, the mayor Flavio Tosi and the prefect, Dr. Perla Stancari, delivered government awards and city medals.

The choice of the date intends to remember the same day of the 1945, when the troops of the Red Army, during their advance towards Berlin, arrived in the Polish town of Oswiecim (Auschwitz) where they discovered the extermination camp, freed the few survivors, revealing to the world the horror of genocide.

On the Day of Remembrance, the "Righteous Among the Nations" are also remembered, all the non-Jews who, at the risk of their own lives, saved the Jews from the Holocaust.
