Memorial Day

12/11/14

The defense minister Roberta Pinotti, the chief of staff of the general army Claudio Graziano and the other chiefs of the armed forces and the weapon of the carabinieri, participated this morning in the commemorations of the day of remembrance.

The ceremonies began with the laying of a laurel wreath at the tomb of the soldier unknown to the homeland by the defense minister. At the end of the deposition the ordinary military archbishop for Italy, Msgr. Santo Marcianò, celebrated the Holy Mass in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli present, among the high ones, the president of the chamber Laura Boldrini, former ministers of defense and the leaders of the armed forces. The celebrations then continued at the Belvedere Caffarelli in Campidoglio, where Minister Pinotti laid a laurel wreath on the memorial stone dedicated to the fallen. In his speech, in memory of all the fallen soldiers and civilians of all the peace missions, the minister quoted the verses of the poet Teresa Mancuso - "brave men of courage and peace, we will keep your memory strong" - explaining how in those words "there is everything that can be said about the fallen, military and civilian, of all the missions conducted by our men and our women under an Italian, European, Atlantic and UN flag". "The best way to pay homage to our fallen - the minister added, closing his speech - consists in making our country feel like a community and a homeland, conquering them every day, in our daily work as builders of a present of freedom and prosperity for us, and an increasingly secure, supportive and inclusive future for our children ".
