At the end of the exercise, General Errico stressed the importance of the technical-specialist skills of the Genius of the Genius, "as well as his natural vocation to be a powerful instrument of connection between military and civil institutions". "The Genius regiments of direct support - added the Chief of Staff - will be strengthened in their ability to search for improvised devices," implementing security measures and protection of soldiers in operation.
The "Smart Sapper" exercise, which lasted a week, involved over 170 military personnel from different Armed Forces departments and several dozen specialized tools of the Genius and allowed to test procedures and operational capabilities for employment both in Italy and in international missions.
Particular attention was paid to the activities of protection of the friendly forces (Force Protection and Counter Improvised Explosive Devices - C-IED), essential capabilities to ensure the safety of the Army's 2.500 military currently engaged in international operations in 17 several countries.
The skills and experience gained in international operations mean that the 12 regiments of the Genius, located throughout the national territory, are able to intervene at any time, in cases of public calamities and utilities to support the population, confirming that they are a dual use resource, ready and flexible at the service of the country.
