The land reclamation activity carried out by the Italian Army bomb squad at the Castel Maggiore (BO) railway engineer regiment at the San Leo (RN) quarry ended yesterday.

As many as 60 Italian-made 152mm high explosive artillery shells and 21 shell casings for artillery shells were destroyed.

The devices found, all dating back to the Second World War, were found in perfect condition and fully functional.

The destruction activity, directed and coordinated by the prefecture of Rimini and by the command for operational forces north of Padua, took place in two distinct phases: the first which saw the bomb squad of the railway engineers engaged in making the devices found safe and transporting them to the San Leo quarry (RN) and the second where the subsequent blasting and their safe destruction.

The activity saw the bomb squad engaged for a full three weeks in which, through the creation of specific "stoves" designed to contain a certain specific quantity of bombs covered with inert material with low particle size, through remotely controlled actions and in maximum safety, they provided for the daily destruction of the artifacts.
