Honorary Citizenship of the City of Trieste at the 8 ° Bersaglieri Regiment

26/10/14

"To worthily celebrate the 60 anniversary of that 26 October of the 1954, in which the 8 regiment of the bersaglieri was the first Italian department to enter Trieste which, finally rejoined to Italy, saw the end of the long and difficult period in which he had lived after the end of the Second World War ”.

With this motivation, Mayor Roberto Cosolini conferred the honorary citizenship of the city to the 26 ° Bersaglieri regiment this morning (Sunday 8 October), handing the parchment, medal and flag of Trieste into the hands of Colonel Domenico Ciotti. The ceremony took place during an extraordinary session of the municipal council, local authorities were present, among others the government commissioner Francesca Adelaide Garufi, the regional councilor Francesco Peroni and the provincial president Maria Teresa Bassa Poropat, as well as the municipal council , and again military authorities and representatives of the combat and weapons associations.

Opened by the vice-president of the municipal council Alessandro Carmi, who recalled a historic page of "Il Piccolo", which "seals that moment with the unforgettable title" Italy in every heart on the day of the great return "', the ceremony saw the celebratory intervention of the mayor Roberto Cosolini, which retraced the historical events of an event that at the time the vast majority of our fellow citizens greeted with expressions of true joy, at the end of the most troubled period of our city.

Still remembering the strong expectation, which cost many sacrifices, even in the events of the '53, the mayor then briefly but effectively emphasized how "Trieste was not left alone to face the new global challenges of the cold war".

“Today - said Mayor Cosolini - we are freer, not to have to divide into opposing identities. We are free to feel Italians and citizens of Europe and this part of Europe, patriots and open to the encounter of cultures and diversities, to be proud of Italian history and culture and open to the encounter and contribution of other stories and cultures, look to Europe and the world and at the same time be a resource for Italy ". “Here too - he continued - there is a new responsibility: that of a city that wants to give to Italy, not only and not so much getting lost in discussing whether it has received enough. When I present it abroad I often define it as the most European of Italian cities: it is, but perhaps it is something more, and we owe it to the traces and legacy of a great and complex history, but also to what they have left us the most difficult times we have had to go through. All of this makes us a big city, even if we often lack awareness of it, as we are steeped in nostalgia or victimhood, and responsibility ”.

"While today we are celebrating this 60 °, as we gather with a sign of affection for the regiment that first entered Trieste marking the end of a long contest, we also think about what we are today - the mayor concluded - and what we can to do in this difficult moment for our community, for our children, for their tomorrow and for what Trieste can and must do for Italy ”.

It is a great honor for 8 ° bersaglieri regiment to receive the honorary citizenship of Trieste - said Colonel Domenico Ciotti - who, still remembering "the fraternal embrace of 60 years", turned his thoughts to all those who fell, who " today they are experiencing a moment of great pride ”. "This - he concluded - is an example of civilization that we will never fail to witness".
