Change of the commander of Safe Roads Rome

(To Army Majority State)
09/01/17

This morning, at the "Gandin" barracks, during the traditional solemn flag-raising ceremony, the group leader of the group "Lazio, Umbria, Abruzzo" was changed, between Brigadier General Gaetano Lunardo, commander of the brigade " Grenadiers of Sardinia "and Brigadier General Roberto Angius, commander of the" Aosta "Brigade.

For about 20 months under the command of the group, General Lunardo led the contingent of Army soldiers employed in the "Safe Roads" operation in competition and jointly with police forces through the various remodulations of the safety device implemented during the extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, the alert situations resulting from the hostile acts occurred in France, Belgium and Germany and the emergency of the earthquake that struck central Italy in the past few months.

Over 12.000 Army soldiers took turns in garrisoning sensitive targets and patrolling squares, underground stations, main railway junctions, ports and airports in the Lazio, Umbria and Abruzzo regions and in the city of Rome, in order to guarantee order and public safety. During this period the "Granatieri di Sardegna" brigade also assumed, without interruption, the leadership of the contingent made up of over 2.000 soldiers who worked in perfect synergy with the police, ensuring the smooth running of the Holy Year and contributing to the implementation of the security measures prepared on the occasion of the 151 "jubilee" events that took place in the city of Rome alone.

Definitely positive balance if we consider that, during the 2016, within the "Safe Roads" operation, the staff of the "Lazio, Umbria, Abruzzo" grouping identified more than 160 thousand people - contributing to the arrest of 264 of these for crimes of different nature - the seizure of over 50 weapons and 6,5 kg of drugs.

A concrete contribution to the overall decline in 17% of crimes recorded in Rome in the 2016, according to data released by the Ministry of the Interior, despite the influx of about 30 million pilgrims. Based on the Law n. 232 of the 2016, which extended the use of 7.050 military throughout the national territory for the "Safe Roads" operation until December of the 2017, the brigade Aosta, led by General Angius, will continue to coordinate and manage the supervision and patrolling activities of the group in Lazio, Umbria, Abruzzo.
