The Italian Army is present throughout the country in competition with the Police Forces for the patrolling of metropolitan areas, the control of immigration centers and the surveillance of sensitive points decided by the Prefectures. The "Strade Sicure" operation started on 4 August 2008, since then more than 2 tons of drugs, over 650 weapons and 12500 vehicles have been seized, almost more than 14.500 arrests were made and about 2 million people and more controlled one million vehicles.
