Bomb Disposal defuse 500 libre bomb dating back to the 2 World War

At the request of the Terni prefecture the Army bomb squads, coming from the 6 ° Genio Pionieri Regiment of Rome, proceeded to disarm and blast an airplane bomb dating back to the Second World War from 500 lbs (220 kg); the American-made bomb had been found in the Fori di Baschi area in the municipality of Orvieto just 250 meters from the roadway of the A1 motorway.

The operations, coordinated by the prefecture of Terni, started at 06.00 with the clearance of an area of ​​1.800 meters of radius, which led to the blocking of traffic on the A1 motorway, the prohibition of flying over the airspace concerned and the closure of the regional railway line Rome - Florence.

After the evacuation operation, the bomb squad initiated a two-stage intervention on the bomb; one before removing the spool which was followed by that of safe transport for subsequent blasting in a quarry.

At 10.20 the operation was completed, which at every moment saw the perfect synergy between the Army military, the Prefecture, the Police forces and the Municipality of Orvieto, in order to guarantee maximum safety for the residents at the inside the intervention area and allow the restoration of the roads on the main communication routes as quickly as possible.

Over the last year, the Army has destroyed more than 7.000 bombs and has carried out reclamation works over the last ten years on the whole national territory.
