Army blasters defuse a plane bomb from 500 pounds

The bomb technicians of the army of the railway engineer genius of Castel Maggiore (BO) have defused a war device of the second world war found at the gates of the inhabited center of Borgo Pace (PU) allowing the return to the homes of the over 400 people evacuated, for the occasion, within a radius of 1,7 km from the place of the discovery.

The bomb, a model GP Mk IV airplane bomb weighing 500 pounds (equal to 226 kg) of American manufacture, had been found in very poor conditions of storage but still active and functioning.

In the first phase, the military bomb technicians took steps to remove the fuses in such a way as to render the war surplus harmless, and then to neutralize it definitively in the Lago del Sole area, identified as a suitable area for the definitive bomb destruction operations.

In the last 10 years, the Italian army has carried out over 10.000 interventions for the reclamation of ordnance dating back to the world wars, only the specialists of the railway engineering regiment have completed over 700 in the course of 2014.
