The surplus, an English-made 250 pound (113 Kg) airplane bomb dating back to World War II, was made to shine in the municipality of Catania in the Jungetto district by the bomb squad of the 4 Army Regiment Genio Guastatori of Palermo.
The sappers of the "Aosta" Mechanized Brigade built a containment structure in Hesco Bastian, in order to reduce and confine the space exposed to the effects of intentional detonation. In the last ten years, the specialized units of the Army engineering departments have carried out 30.000 remediation interventions.
