The Undersecretary of State for Defense Senator Isabella Rauti presided this morning at the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the specialty railwaymen of the Army Corps of Engineers.
Welcomed by the mayor of Castel Maggiore, lawyer. Belinda Gottardi, the commander of the land operational support forces, Army Corps General Massimo Scala, the commander of the railway engineering regiment Salvatore Magazzù, and numerous civil, religious and military authorities, Senator Rauti attended the military ceremony, held in Piazza Amendola in the city of Castel Maggiore, in front of the War Flag of the railway engineers regiment.
In fact, this year marks the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the specialty railwaymen. In 1873, a group of 60 men trained in the use of railway material, belonging to the 10th and 14th companies of the sappers' engineers transformed into railway companies, gave life to the "railwaymen's brigade" in the "Mission Barracks" of Turin. , which later became a regiment in 1910.
The speech of the Undersecretary of State for Defense highlighted how over time the railway engineering specialty has adapted to the changing operational needs of Defense and the constantly evolving international scenarios. He also underlined how the regiment not only keeps its ancient vocation and tradition alive but stands out for its versatility by operating in the railway sector and in clearing the territory from unexploded war devices, confirming itself as a precious resource in Italy and abroad.
During the ceremony, Eng. Luigi Cantamessa, general director of the FS Foundation and managing director of Italian Tourist Trains, delivered the parchment which sanctions the donation of the railway carriage used for the transport of the remains of the Unknown Soldier used during the commemorations which took place on the centenary of the transport of the body.
Framed in the engineers brigade, the regiment genius railwaymen it is the guardian of the specialty and constitutes a unique reality of its kind. Today the unit is constantly employed in profitable synergy with the railway companies TPER, FER and Dinazzano Po, providing specialized personnel at the plants and on the regional lines; is able to build railway bridges and ensure the maintenance of military railway connections. In addition, the railway regiment contributes to responding to emergencies of public disasters and provides its contribution to safeguarding public safety in the event of the discovery of weapons of war, intervening promptly wherever there is a need.
