Emergency transfer from Cagliari to Milan

A woman hospitalized in the resuscitation department of the "Brotzu" Hospital in Cagliari due to a very serious pathology, was transferred today urgently to the Policlinico S. Matteo di Pavia on board an aircraft of the Italian Air Force.

The transport request, necessary to guarantee the patient immediate specialized medical care and sent by the hospital to the Prefecture of Cagliari, was received by the Situation Room of the General Staff of the Air Force which ordered the immediate execution of the flight.

The aircraft, a 50 Falcon of the 31 ° Stormo, took off from Rome Ciampino and headed initially to Milan Linate airport where it took the medical team of the San Matteo Hospital, composed of doctors 5 and nurse 1, equipped with a special medical equipment used later during transport.

Subsequently, the aircraft headed for the Cagliari airport where it landed at Elmas "Mario Mameli" airport at 01:43 in the morning and left again at 05:15 for the Milan airport where it arrived. after about 1 hour of flight.

The transfer of the patient on the aircraft required the use of the special "ambulift" lifting device.

Arriving at Linate airport, the patient was immediately transferred, on an ambulance, to the Resuscitation Unit of the Policlinico San Matteo in Pavia.

The Cagliari-Elmas airport currently represents, for the whole southern part of Sardinia, the most used airport for this type of flights, as it is close to the main hospital facilities of the capital.

The aircraft of the 31st Wing of Ciampino are used for state transport and for public utility missions, such as the emergency medical transport of the sick, seriously injured and organs for transplants, as well as for interventions in favor of people in any case in risk situations.This last activity, given the imminent danger to life of the people transported, requires a level of readiness, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.
