The closure of the Elmas Detachment is part of a complex process of transformation, which the Armed Forces has already started some time ago through the adoption of various reorganization measures aimed at concentrating the operational Departments, the Bodies and the Detachments, in the smallest number of locations distributed throughout the national territory.

The airport, following the change of status referred to in the interministerial decree of 14 February 2008, is today a "Civil Airport", whose management is the exclusive competence of the Civil Aviation and to which the Air Force has sold the state and infrastructure areas no longer of specific military interest.
