On Friday 21 February, the Situation Room of the Chief of the General Staff of the Air Force, authorized an emergency medical transport in favor of a Sicilian patient of 54 years suffering from a severe chronic renal failure.

An HH-139 helicopter from the 82 ° SAR Center in Trapani took the patient, residing on the island of Lipari, taking him to Sigonella, where a Falcon 50 aircraft from the 31 ° Stormo of Ciampino (RM) took the man, accompanied by a medical team, to transport it to Florence.

At the Tuscan capital, the patient was immediately transferred, in an ambulance, to a hospital capable of offering him the necessary care.

The Air Force guarantees 24 hours on 24, for 365 days a year, the search and rescue of flight crews in difficulty, also contributing to public utility activities such as the search for missing persons at sea or in the mountains, the emergency medical transport of life-threatened patients and the rescue of serious traumatized persons. Since its establishment to date, the SAR crews, dependent on the 15 ° Stormo of Cervia, have saved about 7.000 people in danger of life. The aircraft of the 31 ° Stormo of Ciampino are used for the transport of State and for missions of public utility, such as urgent medical transport for the sick, severely traumatized and transplant organs, as well as for interventions in favor of people in situations of risk. This last activity, given the imminent danger of life of the transported people, imposes a level of readiness, twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year.
